Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah, the arts have always been a major part of my life. As a child, I drew, created crafts, played the flute and took pictures with my Brownie camera. My secondary art teacher, Harold Petersen, influenced my life as he encouraged my art and urged me on. He brought in art instructors from USU to introduce us to the terrific art program there. After a lifetime of intending on attending BYU, I switched my college choice to USU and attended their Commercial Art program. It didn’t take long to figure out that it was difficult to make a living in commercial art in Utah at that time, and Utah is where I wanted to stay. I switched my major to Education with an Arts emphasis.

As life continued on, I’d continue to dabble in the arts, taking pottery classes, sketching occasionally, going to museums, scrapbooking, interior decorating and other interests. Little did I know that when I bought a “nice camera” to take pictures of my children, that I would find a challenge that would engage my mind and soul. I just wanted to take the kind of pictures I had seen, pictures that captured the magic of the person and place, not just the snapshot. It was so frustrating to fail at creating the magic so often.

After years of practice and community instruction, I switched to a digital SLR camera that would allow me to control what the camera was doing. Photography began to fill my life. When I came across the website, DPChallenge, I found a community willing to compete and help others learn the craft and skills of photography. Many of the images you see today are because I accepted a challenge and explored new subject matter.

Finding beauty and capturing it for myself and others gives me such a thrill. Watching the light dance off leaves in a sunlite canyon, shadows creating patterns on a young bride’s dress and flashes of emotion rushing across faces, set my imagination on fire. These visions of light that are meaning in our lives need to be saved and savored forever. I have to capture them and present them so that others can see the magic I see.

Along with my profession as an elementary administrator, I’ve created my own business, Infinity Photography, where I sell my prints, and create portraits. What a great opportunity to have two passions, making lives rich for children through education, and creating the extraordinary through photography. I am blessed.
